Did you know that we could save about £1 million every year in Herefordshire alone if we used our medicines more wisely and wasted less? This money could pay for:
- 200 more hip replacements
- 140 more heart by-pass operations
- 1,400 more cataract operations
- 30 more community nurses
- 180 more knee replacements
We can all help to reduce wastage by making sure that we only order repeat prescription medicines if we still need them, and have a regular medicines use review with your pharmacist or doctor.
A medicines management campaign is run each year to raise awareness of the appropriate use of medicines, with advertising via bill-boards, telephone kiosks as well as NHS sites such as community hospitals, GP practices, pharmacies and care homes. Closer working with the Council has enabled better distribution of information to groups such as schools.
Make sure that you dispose of unwanted medicines safely by returning them to a community pharmacy. Ensure that you keep medicines well out of the sight and reach of children at home, preferably in a locked cupboard.
